It felt wonderful to feel the warmth of the sun once again. It was a long time since the sun came out and shines its rays down onto earth. Constantly it has been rain, rain and more rain. So much so that one may actually think that Singapore might actually turn into Atlantis! No, absolutely not. I have had enough of water, for the moment at least.
“Eh look! That cloud look like a sheep right? That one, that one”, exclaimed Anthony while pointing in frantically to that particularly cloud. Anthony’s voice snapped me out of my thoughts of the “wet daydream”, figuratively of course referring to the weather lately. We all looked and up in response to Anthony. Some spotted the sheep almost immediately and agreed in awe while trying to pass on their bit of imagination to those having difficulty deciphering the shape. We were all lying down on the grass, smelly and drenched in sweat. The match amazingly brought us back to life again. The adrenaline, the way you go huff and puff chasing that one little ball, all of it felt wonderful.
Almost a week of endless water dropping down from the skies was driving us insane. First and foremost, we are Asians, we need the sun. Yes, we do complain about how hot the weather is sometimes and rant and complain our hearts out when the air-con spoils. But still, when the sun hides for a while, we feels something amiss and start missing that fiery ball up in the sky. Second, we are boys. You cannot expect teenage boys to stay at home twenty-four hours seven days a week, that is excluding gamers and couch potatoes. As they say boys will be boys, we immediately gathered everyone and had a match at the moment we saw the sun was out and those grey clouds disappeared and safely hidden out of sight.
As I lay on the ground looking up to the sky, I realized how much I was fascinated by the sky and the different looks and colors it can transform itself into through the various weathers. The one particular transformation of the sky I loved most ever since I was a child was the thunderstorm. In fact, it was one of my earliest memories I had when I was little.
I was unlike the other kids who were terrified of the lightning and thunder and immediately hide at the sight or the sound of it, I loved it. Whenever a thunderstorm drew near and the thunder rumbled, I would position myself near the window and look at the sky trying to spot flashes of lighting. The flash of it really fascinates me, the shapes, the curves and the speed it strikes. One may find it weird like those many who have told me so when I disagreed how much I loved the rain but I myself find it difficult to explain how in a way it entices me.
Maybe an explanation would be that the lightning and the thunder as well as the rain create that chaotic atmosphere. An atmosphere that cause one’s blood to rush and set the adrenaline pumping. Or maybe it is the element that is present in a thunderstorm the way people rush for shelter, oblivious and completely unaware of their surrounding in unison attempt to find shelter. That waterfall like sound, water falling down from the heaven acts like a shell, enveloping and silencing any other noise present. This, combined with the refreshing cold winds creates an environment so soothing, so relaxing easing the troubled mind. Though too much of a good thing is indeed not good, an example of the weather lately.
As I contemplated how much I love the sky, I didn’t realized that I was smiling to myself, so much so that my friends had gathered around me obviously curious of what had gotten over me. “Eh dey! Thinking of your girlfriend is it? Smiling to yourself Wake up! Going to rain soon, unless you want to stay here in the rain”, Raju had the honor of snapping me out of another of my “wet daydream”. I smile sheepishly, blushing as they cackled at the way I jerked and snapped to reality. As we packed up , I took a picture of the white floating sheep with the warmth sun above it. And behind it was the wonderful and gorgeous sky with its entire splendor.
